My five service ministry trips over the last seven years have been the most personally rewarding vacations of my life, though they’ve brought tears and sadness as well as joy and relaxation. Friends ask me why I do it. The reason feels very clear, but this is my attempt to put it into words. My inaugural service vacation tears came during the first of four ministry trips to Belize with my church, St. Matthew’s.We brought suitcases of donated bathing suits for the 60-plus children we taught to swim per day, setting up makeshift dressing rooms in a small hotel room. Our teen volunteers emptied our treasure chests on the floor, arranging suits by gender and size and acting as fashion advisers.

Agents from Berkshire Hathaway Home Services’ Pacific Palisades Office got together for a “Summer Celebration” to raise monies for the Children’s Burn Foundation. It was a beautiful evening hosted by The Charitable Foundation, a Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices’ organization that provides grants to promote health, education, community and the environment.
